I Am a Scientist - Portfolio Project Guidelines
Step 1: Research a Scientist Who Interests You
If you don't already have a favorite scientist and you're having trouble finding a scientist, take a look at some of the resources below for ideas and information. These feature well-known and less familiar scientists throughout history.
Step 2: Construct an educational poster featuring your chosen scientist
The goal of your poster is to highlight who your scientist is/was as a person; science is a human endeavor, and it's important that we don't lose sight of the humans who do it. When we think of scientists exclusively as recluses, geniuses, or eccentrics, it becomes harder and harder to visualize ourselves doing science and acting in the capacity of scientists.
Include the following Information:
I highly recommend using the free tools on Canva.com to build your poster
Include the following Information:
- Basic Background
- Your scientist's name
- When they lived
- This can sometimes be a challenge to find; if you can't find information like birth and death dates, you may be able to find something like when they earned their PhD, or when their most important work was published. This information can still serve to contextualize the time period that your scientist worked in
- Biographical information
- Any relevant information you can find about who they were as a person. For example, their upbringing, economic background, ethnicity, race, gender, hobbies, religion, etc. This should be one of the largest and most detailed sections of writing on your poster.
- A picture of your scientist
- Your scientist's name
- Research Focus
- What did/does your scientist study? What do they want to understand?
- What first interested your scientist in their research?
- How do you think the world would be different without this scientist and their work?
- If available, include a quote by your scientist
- This can be a great way of highlighting their personal philosophy - how they approached the world around them.

Step 3: Submit Your assignment
Submit your assignment to the Google Form Dropbox below. The Google Form contains two graded reflection questions; you need to complete those reflection questions even if you submit your poster to my webmail, since the reflection is worth 40% of the grade associated with this assignment.
